Social Media in 2022
Social media is an excellent way to reach new audiences and build your brand. On these platforms, you can share, retweet, and re-pin material. This implies that your followers can share your material with their friends and family, allowing your company to reach a wider audience. To do all this kind of communication, we need one social media listed below.
1. Pinterest
The idea for Pinterest emerged from an earlier app created by Ben Silberman, and Paul Sciarra called Tote, which served as a virtual replacement for paper catalogs. Tote struggled as a company, significantly due to difficulties with mobile payments. Mobile payment technology was not advanced enough at the time to allow for convenient on-the-go transactions, preventing consumers from making multiple purchases through the app.
On the other hand, Tote users were accumulating extensive collections of favorite products and sharing them with others. The behavior struck a chord with Silberman, and he shifted the company to building Pinterest, which allowed users to create collections of a variety of items and share them.
In February 2013, Reuters and ComScore stated that Pinterest had 48.7 million users globally. A study released in July 2013 by French social media agency Semi cast revealed the website had 70 million users worldwide. In October 2016, the company had 150 million monthly active users rising to 175 million monthly active users by April 2017 and 250 million in September 2018. Since 2020, there have been over 400 million monthly active users.
Advantages Of Pinterest:
Pinterest is more effective than any other social media source at driving traffic back to a website. Use this tool to increase the number of backlinks to your website, leading to more traffic and better reviews, and customer satisfaction on your site’s home page.
Disadvantages Of Pinterest:
Like any other digital social media site that is not used in balance, Pinterest may be highly addictive and hurt a negative impact on your life. Addiction does not strike on its own, it slowly sneaks up on you, and before you realize it, you’ll be losing hours on end, focusing solely on the site.
2. Instagram
Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger in 2010. The app allows users to upload media that can be edited with filters. Users can browse other users’ content by tags and locations. Posts can be shared with the public or with pre-approved followers.
Instagram had one million registered users in December 2010. In June 2011, it announced that it had 5 million users, which increased to 10 million in September. This growth continued to 30 million users in April 2012, 80 million in July 2012, 100 million in February 2013, 130 million in June 2013.
Advantages Of Instagram
Instagram is excellent if you like taking pictures and posting them right away for others to see. It’s also fast when you snap a picture upload it, and it’ll automatically be uploaded or put on your Facebook account, Twitter account, and Tumblr account.
Disadvantages Of Instagram
Instagram is only accessible as an iPhone and Android app. It eliminates mobile users who have Windows Mobile, BlackBerry, or Linux. Therefore, there are still a large number of customers who you would be unable to contact if you use Instagram to advertise your products.
3. Twitter
Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone, and Evan Williams in March 2006 and launched in July of that year. By 2012, more than 100 million users posted 340 million tweets a day, and the service handled an average of 1.6 billion search queries per day. In 2013, it was one of the ten most-visited websites and described as “the SMS of the Internet”. In Q1 2019, Twitter had more than 330 million monthly active users. In practice, most tweets are written by a minority of users.
Twitter is an American microblogging and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as “tweets”. Registered users can post, like, and retweet tweets, but unregistered users can only read publicly available ones.
Advantages Of Twitter
You can make an account for free with a large audience. You can connect with many renowned individuals, such as stars and celebrities, using Twitter. Most famous people now use Twitter to communicate with their followers, and it is one of the best ways to stay in touch with them.
Disadvantages Of Twitter
Users can’t upload videos to Twitter; instead, you can only submit links to different websites. This isn’t as effective for visual content; Twitter is more link-based, so if you want to share more photographs and videos on Twitter, you’ll have to use other methods. It is not designed for visual content and is primarily text-based. As a result, it is not as effective as other photo and video sharing services.
4. Flipboard
Flipboard is a news aggregator and social network aggregation company based in Palo Alto, California, with offices in New York, Vancouver, and Beijing. Its software, also known as Flipboard, was first released in July 2010. It aggregates content from social media, news feeds, photo sharing sites, and other websites presents it in magazine format, and allows users to “flip” through the articles, images, and videos being transmitted. Readers can also save stories into Flipboard magazines.
Over the last few years, the Android smartphone platform turned into Flipboard’s most popular audience, generating 60% usage. Along the way, the Redwood City, California-based company, has quietly built into a significant force, with 145 million active monthly users. As of March 2016, the company claims 28 million magazines created by users on Flipboard.
5. Snapchat
Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy, and Reggie Brown, former students at Stanford University. It has become known for representing a new, mobile-first direction for social media and places significant emphasis on users interacting with virtual stickers and augmented reality objects. As of July 2021, Snapchat had 293 million daily active users, a 23% growth over a year. On average more than four billion Snaps are sent each day. Snapchat is popular among the younger generations, particularly those below the age of 16, leading to many privacy concerns for parents.
Snapchat is an American multimedia instant messaging app and service developed by Snap Inc., originally Snapchat Inc. The app has evolved from initially focusing on person-to-person photo sharing to presently featuring users’ “Stories” of 24 hours of chronological content, along with “Discover”, letting brands show ad-supported short-form content. One of the principal features of Snapchat is that pictures and messages are usually only available for a short time before they become inaccessible to their recipients.
It also allows users to keep photos in the “my eyes only,” which lets them keep their photos in a password-protected space. It has also reportedly incorporated limited use of end-to-end encryption, with plans to broaden its use in the future.
Advantages
It’s simple to connect to Snapchat. You can easily create your Snapchat ID; however, no personal information is exposed due to privacy concerns. By sharing your ID via Snap code or other means, you can connect with others. Snapchat’s servers are highly secure, unlike other social media networks, and the privacy setting cannot be bypassed. When you try to take a picture, the software warns you.
Disadvantages
Snapchat can be very addictive to both young and older adults. Like other social networks, you can spend a lot more time adding different filters on Snapchat than you can on Facebook. More people, particularly the younger generation, are crazy about the filters, to the point where they have made a new identity based on these filters.
6. Tiktok
TikTok, known in China as Douyin. Douyin was launched by ByteDance in Beijing, China, in September 2016, originally under the name A.me, before rebranding to Douyin in December 2016. ByteDance planned on Douyin expanding overseas. The founder of ByteDance, Zhang Yiming, stated that “China is home to only one-fifth of Internet users globally. If we don’t grow globally, we are bound to lose to peers eyeing the four-fifths. So, going global is a must. Douyin was developed in 200 days and had 100 million users within a year, with more than one billion videos viewed every day.
TikTok has provided a platform for users to create content for fun and money. As the platform has grown significantly over the past few years, companies can advertise and rapidly reach their intended demographic through influencer marketing. The platform’s AI algorithm also contributes to the influencer marketing potential, as it picks out content according to the user’s preference.
Sponsored content is not as prevalent on the platform as other social media apps, but brands and influencers still can make as much as they would, if not more than other platforms. Influencers on the forum who earn money through engagement, such as likes and comments, are called “meme machines.
Advantages
A large percentage of users share their funny video edits with others to entertain them. It’s simple to put a smile on your face and forget about the stress of the day after you’ve registered with Tik Tok. And you’ll see a taste of endless enjoyment.
Disadvantages
The Tiktok app has evolved into a video database, attracting users of all ages. Kids are becoming addicted to this app’s overuse as it hosts more and more content. Kids are more likely to be influenced by content shared on the Tiktok video app. Parents are also suffering as a result of their children’s addiction.
7. Reddit
The idea and initial development of Reddit originated with then college roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian in 2005. Huffman and Ohanian attended a lecture by programmer-entrepreneur Paul Graham in Boston, Massachusetts, during their spring break from the University of Virginia. After speaking with Huffman and Ohanian following the lecture, Graham invited the two to apply to his startup incubator Y Combinator. Their initial idea, My Mobile Menu, was unsuccessful and was intended to allow users to order food by SMS text messaging. During a brainstorming session to pitch another startup, the idea was created for what Graham called the “front page of the Internet”. Huffman and Ohanian were accepted in Y Combinator’s first-class for this idea.
Reddit is an American social news aggregation, web content rating, and discussion website. Registered members submit content to the site, such as links, text posts, images, and videos, then voted up or down by other members. Posts are organized by subject into user-created boards called “communities” or “subreddits”, covering topics such as news, politics, religion, science, movies, video games, music, books, sports, fitness, cooking, pets, and image-sharing. Submissions with more upvotes appear towards the top of their subreddit and, if they receive enough upvotes, ultimately on the site’s front page. Although there are strict rules prohibiting harassment, it still occurs, and Reddit administrators moderate the communities and close or restrict them on occasion.
8. LinkedIn
LinkedIn is an American business and employment-oriented online service that operates via websites and mobile apps. The company was founded in December 2002 by Reid Hoffman and the founding team members from PayPal and Socialnet.com. In late 2003, Sequoia Capital led the Series A investment in the company. In August 2004, LinkedIn reached 1 million users. In March 2006, LinkedIn achieved its first month of profitability. In April 2007, LinkedIn reached 10 million users. In February 2008, LinkedIn launched a mobile version of the site.
LinkedIn allows members (both workers and employers) to create profiles and connect in an online social network representing real-world professional relationships. Members can invite anyone (an existing member or not) to become a “connection”. LinkedIn can also organize offline events, join groups, write articles, publish job postings, post photos and videos, and more.
Advantages
Premium membership comes with several benefits. It’s completely free to create a LinkedIn account and make connections. However, your free account includes practically everything you’ll need to get started with your research. LinkedIn also provides free analysis, allowing users to look for specific information or target populations.
Disadvantages
Most LinkedIn connections or messages received aren’t necessarily relevant to one’s career or business. Scammers can send requests for connections and messages for selling anything unrelated to one’s profile if one posts one’s profile on LinkedIn.
Takeaway
For any firm, social media can be an excellent tool for increasing visibility, improving relationships, and establishing two-way engagement with customers. It can also serve as a venue for feedback and help to raise the organization’s profile and reputation. However, we must be conscious of how we employ them. If we can learn to use social media effectively, it will be a positive shift.
